A new video message from actor and science advocate Alan Alda encourages scientists to, “See if you can come up with an answer to ‘What is sleep?’ that both enlightens and entertains 11-year-news.” The mystery of sleep is the focus of the 2015 Flame Challenge, which is organized by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. One written entry and one video or graphic entry will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the winners will get a trip to New York City, where they will meet Alan Alda and be honored at a special event at the World Science Festival in May 2015. The submission deadline is Feb. 13, 2015.
