The AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee (RUC) is a unique, multi-specialty committee dedicated to describing the resources required to provide physician services. These recommendations are based on data collected from surveys of practicing physicians regarding the physician work involved in performing CPT codes. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) considers this input when developing Relative Value Units (RVUs).

In the coming weeks, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine will be conducting a RUC survey of the CPT codes for home sleep apnea testing (95800, 95801, 95806). For this survey process to succeed, the cooperation and participation of practicing physicians is essential for the recommendations to be accurately and fairly presented to CMS.

For a better understanding of the AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee process, the AASM asks you to watch the video below, Understanding the RUC Survey Instrument: Physician Services, and download the PowerPoint presentation, Understanding the RUC Survey Instrument. Prepared by the AMA, they describe the survey process and provide general information on the standard RUC survey instrument.
