ANALYSIS: Medicare Payments for Physician Services in 2012

Between now and Jan. 1, 2012, physicians can anticipate frequent speculation from industry analysts about how Congress will address the next scheduled reduction to physician Medicare payments.  With the Medicare sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula scheduled to cut the 2012 payments by approximately 29.5 percent, Congress will have to impose another short-term fix or develop a permanent solution.

IOM Recognizes Sufficient Sleep as a Key Objective in “Healthy People 2020”

In December the AASM reported that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services included four sleep health objectives in “Healthy People 2020.” The new 10-year plan covers 42 topics and nearly 600 objectives for health promotion and disease prevention. This week the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies announced that it had identified one of these sleep health objectives as one of the 24 key objectives in the plan.

Safety and Efficacy of Hypnotic Drugs Workshop is May 10-11

The FDA Division of Neurology Products in conjunction with PERI will host the Safety and Efficacy of Hypnotic Drugs worshop in Bethseda, MD. The workshop will focus on insomnia, study population selections, end-points and efficacy assessments. The second day will center on the safety of insomnia drugs, in particular on the assessment of next-day function, including psychomotor vigilance and driving testing.

AASM Urges Congress to Maintain Appropriate NIH Funding Levels

Implementing across-the-board budget cuts could stop prominent, patient-oriented research in mid-stream, creating a gap in the research field. The AASM supports funding for the National Institute of Health that will allow the careful continuation of the current research agenda, and urged Congress to recognize the value of the NIH as an incubator for advancing scientific and health-care knowledge.
