The AASM Accreditation Committee recently evaluated the Standards for Accreditation to ensure they are inclusive of all provider types. The AASM board of directors has approved the committee’s update to the Standards for Accreditation, effective July 1, 2022, replacing the term “APRN” with “advanced practice provider,” where appropriate.
The term “advanced practice provider” encompasses nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses. An example of this change can be found in “Standard F-8 Diagnosis of Sleep Disorders.” The first section under Standard F-8 now reads, “Only a licensed physician, and advanced practice provider in certain states, can diagnose a medical condition such as obstructive sleep apnea or snoring.”
These revised standards — for Sleep Facility, Independent Sleep Practice, and Specialty Practice Accreditation — can be accessed on the Accreditation Reference Materials webpage on the AASM website. Please contact the Accreditation Department at accreditation@aasm.org with any questions.
