The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recently joined the American Medical Association Federation and a broad coalition of national physician organizations in signing a letter supporting federal legislation to strengthen implementation of the No Surprises Act.

In a May 11, 2026, letter coordinated by the American Medical Association, the AASM and dozens of specialty societies expressed support for the “No Surprises Act Enforcement Act” (H.R. 4710/S. 2420) and urged Congress to advance this legislation to address ongoing implementation challenges. The No Surprises Act Enforcement Act aims to address these challenges by strengthening the enforcement of existing law. Specifically, the legislation would:

  • Authorize penalties for parties that fail to comply with required payment timelines following an IDR determination
  • Provide federal regulators with clearer authority to enforce compliance with binding IDR decisions
  • Help restore accountability and ensure that the dispute resolution process functions as intended

The AASM’s participation reflects ongoing concerns among sleep medicine clinicians about delayed or incomplete payments, particularly when navigating complex payer disputes. The AASM will continue to work with coalition partners and federal policymakers to support legislation and regulatory actions that improve transparency in payer processes, strengthen enforcement of existing protections, and ensure the No Surprises Act works as intended for both patients and clinicians.
