The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has approved a minor update to its Standards for Accreditation, which will take effect June 1, 2026.
The AASM Board of Directors revised the Standards for Accreditation to remove barriers with limited impact on sleep program quality. The revision to the accreditation standards consists of an edit to Standard L‑15 Equipment Maintenance & Procedures for in-lab sleep testing. The revision clarifies the requirement for annual electrical safety review of patient-related equipment, specifying that annual electrical safety inspection, rather than testing, must be conducted by a certified electrician or biomedical engineer.
This update reflects current practice related to equipment maintenance and safety oversight in accredited sleep centers. No other substantive changes were made to the standards, and the update does not alter accreditation requirements for Specialty Practice programs.
Updated versions of the 2026 Standards for Accreditation and 2026 Specialty Practice Standards for Accreditation are now available on the AASM website. Accredited programs and applicants are encouraged to review the revised standards to ensure compliance by the June 1, 2026, effective date.
