DARIEN, IL – The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates the three students selected as the winners of the 2022 AASM “Make Sleep Work for You” High School Video Contest, which focused on educating teens about the importance of healthy sleep.

The annual contest is open to high school students in the U.S. who have permission from a parent or guardian and approval from a sponsoring teacher at their school. More than 80 videos were submitted from students across the country. Each entry was evaluated for its originality and video quality, as well as the appropriateness, relevance, and accuracy of its message, consistent with the mission and vision of the AASM.

“I congratulate this year’s high school video contest winners for developing entertaining and informative videos that will encourage their friends and peers to get sufficient, healthy sleep for years to come,” said AASM President Dr. Raman Malhotra. “I’m grateful to the teens and their teachers for submitting videos and helping raise awareness of how sleep is essential to be happy, healthy, and productive throughout life.”

Each submission was reviewed by the AASM Public Awareness Advisory Committee, which selected the first and second place winners and 10 candidates for the third place “Teen’s Choice Award.” A judging panel of six teens reviewed the 10 nominees for third place and selected the Teen’s Choice Award winner. The panel represented the Mission San Jose High School Biotechnology Club, which provides students with a deeper understanding of applied sciences and their applications in medicine and health care. Prizes for the winning videos are split evenly between the student and his or her school.

Along with a balanced diet and regular exercise, sleep is one of the pillars of a healthy lifestyle. Getting the sleep that your body needs is essential for your health, well-being, and mood. The AASM recommends that teens between 13 and 18 years of age should sleep 8 to 10 hours per night on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
