On March 19, Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed SB 314 (Sleep Disorders Education Amendments) into law, directing the Utah Division of Population Health within the Department of Health and Human Services to develop educational materials and perform public outreach on sleep health and sleep disorders.
It is the position of the AASM that sleep is essential to health, and as a result, sleep education should have a prominent place in public health promotional programs, which historically promoted health nutrition and exercise and reducing risky behaviors instead of sleep. Over the past several years, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has developed information and resources on sleep and sleep disorders to increase public awareness and recognition of sleep disorders.
