The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed a 2.8% cut to physician Medicare payments starting Jan. 1, 2025. This would be the fifth consecutive year of cuts, threatening access to health care for Medicare beneficiaries.

Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) are leading a bipartisan effort to halt these cuts and secure a payment update for physicians. They have circulated a “Dear Colleague” letter urging House leadership to act immediately.

Physician Medicare payment rates have dropped 29% over the past two decades when adjusted for inflation, while the cost of running a practice continues to rise. The 2025 Medicare physician fee schedule proposed rule indicates a 3.6% increase in practice costs.

The AASM is asking that you contact your member of Congress by Sept. 27 through the AMA Physician Grassroots Network to support this crucial initiative and help ensure sustainable Medicare payments!
