The AASM continues to participate in the activities of the American Medical Association (AMA) RVS Update Committee (RUC), a unique, multi-specialty committee dedicated to describing the resources required to provide physician services and developing recommendations for the values of these services. AASM staff and RUC advisors attend three RUC meetings per year to track recommended changes and advocate for higher relative value units for sleep-related codes. RUC recommendations are based on data collected from surveys of practicing physicians regarding the physician work involved in performing Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. These recommendations are shared with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Participation of AASM members in RUC surveys

In the future, AASM members may be asked to contribute to the development or update of RUC recommendations for specific codes by completing the RUC survey instrument. RUC surveys are important to sleep medicine and the medical profession, and it is vital for members to complete the survey, if requested. To ensure integrity of the survey data, you need to avoid collaborating with any other physician on your responses to the physician work portion of this survey.

You can learn more from the AMA by watching this 20-minute video, “The RBRVS and the AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee (RUC) Process,” downloading the PDF, “2022 RVS Update Process” or viewing the PowerPoint presentation, “Understanding the RUC Survey Instrument.”

Members may send questions regarding the RUC process and/or survey instrument to coding@aasm.org.
