On Feb. 3, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that the “Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exception” policy will be applied to Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) eligible clinicians who have been impacted by the wildfires in California.

Performance categories for impacted clinicians will be reweighed to 0% during the 2024 and 2025 data submission periods, and they will receive a neutral payment adjustment for the 2026 and 2027 MIPS payment years. Additional information can be found on the Quality Payment Program Exception Applications webpage.

The AASM also encourages AASM-accredited sleep centers that have been affected by the California wildfires to review eligibility for the AASM Foundation Disaster Relief Fund to potentially apply for financial assistance, if needed.
