The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) encourages members to submit comments on proposed local coverage determination (LCD) policies for hypoglossal nerve stimulation for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Developed by six Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs), the proposed LCDs are now open for public comment.

The MACs process Medicare Part A and B claims for defined geographic areas called “jurisdictions.” Because requirements vary between jurisdictions, Medicare providers must adhere to the LCD requirements established for your jurisdiction. The public comment period is an opportunity for providers and patients to provide input on proposed LCDs prior to finalization.

The Medicare Policies page can help you identify your jurisdiction and MAC. Then you can click on the appropriate links in the table below to view the proposed LCD and supplemental billing and coding article, which contain proposed coding for these services.

The AASM encourages members to subscribe to MAC communications to receive alerts and updates for your jurisdiction. Questions may be sent to coding@aasm.org.
