A study in the March issue of SLEEP reports that modafinil improves driving performance in patients with narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 400 mg of modafinil or a placebo for five days prior to the driving test, which involved a 230-km round trip between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on an open highway. Results show that modafinil reduced the mean number of inappropriate line crossings compared to placebo.
