Twenty years ago the American Medical Association (AMA) granted the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) a seat in its House of Delegates. For two decades this position has given us a platform to represent the interests and needs of sleep specialists.
Now we are in danger of losing this seat, which is dependent on the number of our members who join the AMA. We have less than one week to boost this number to retain our seat.
Losing this position of influence would be a loss for our field. The voice of sleep specialists would be absent from the House of Delegates, and we would have much more limited opportunities to give input to the CPT Editorial Panel and the AMA/Specialty Society RUC, which provides recommendations to CMS for the relative values of physician services. We also would lose the ability to leverage the AMA on issues of importance for our field.
If you already have joined the AMA for 2018, I thank you for representing our specialty. If you are not an AMA member, will you join the AMA or renew today to help support the sleep field?
To help offset a portion of the cost of your AMA membership, the AASM is offering a $50 credit to anyone who joins the AMA between now and this Wednesday. To receive your credit, simply email a copy of your AMA membership payment receipt to policy@aasm.org or fax it to (630) 737-9790 by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18. This credit can be used toward a purchase in the AASM online store, registration for an AASM event or renewal of your AASM membership.
I thank you for your consideration of this urgent request, and I appreciate your support for the field of sleep medicine.
Sincerely,
Ilene M. Rosen, MD, MS
AASM President
