After becoming a student member in 1994, my level of involvement in the AASM steadily increased as I volunteered on committees, served on the Board of Directors, and was elected as president. This experience has greatly contributed to my personal and professional growth, giving me the pleasure of working closely with likeminded colleagues to help advance the field of sleep medicine.
In October the AASM issued a call for nominations, inviting members to nominate candidates for service as an at-large member of the Board of Directors. As outlined in the AASM bylaws, all nominees were reviewed by the Nominating Committee, which recommended a slate of candidates for the election. Then the final ballot of nominees was presented to the membership, with all regular, fellow and emeritus members having the opportunity to cast a vote.
I am grateful for all of the members who participated in this process by responding to the call for nominations or voting in the election. I am pleased to announce that the following individuals have been elected by the membership to serve on the Board of Directors:
- President-Elect: Timothy Morgenthaler, MD
- Secretary/Treasurer: Ronald Chervin, MD
- Director-at-Large: Kelly Carden, MD
I congratulate each of these colleagues, knowing that they will make outstanding contributions as we give direction to the AASM and address the interests and needs of our members. Their term of office will begin this June at SLEEP 2013 in Baltimore, which is also when current President-Elect M. Safwan Badr, MD, will begin his term as AASM president.
The 2013 – 2014 Board of Directors will be introduced to the membership at the AASM General Membership Meeting on Monday, June 3. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I invite all AASM members to join us at this meeting as we review the accomplishments of the past year and discuss current and upcoming initiatives.
Sincerely,
Sam Fleishman, MD
President
