On Sept. 23, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that due to the Change Healthcare cyberattack, clinicians, groups, subgroups, virtual groups, and alternative payment model (APM) entities will be allowed to request a reweighting of one or more Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) performance categories under the “extreme and uncontrollable circumstances” exception policies for the 2023 payment year through Oct. 11, 2024, at 8 p.m. EDT.
Reweighting requests under the extreme and uncontrollable circumstances exception policies must be submitted using the “MIPS Targeted Review” form, which can be found by signing in to qpp.cms.gov. Forms citing reasons outside of the Change Healthcare cyberattack won’t be accepted.
It is essential to highlight that CMS will not reweigh any performance category for which data has been received, and a score will be calculated for that performance category.
