Early career registered sleep technologists are invited to apply for a new autoscoring Gold Standard Panel that will support the AASM’s efforts to provide oversight and certify autoscoring sleep scoring packages, helping to move the field of sleep medicine forward. The AASM Autoscoring Certification Pilot Program has ended, and the AASM is developing a Full PSG Autoscoring Certification Program. In support of this program, the AASM is forming a Gold Standard Panel and is seeking four early career registered sleep technologists (independent contractors) to join our existing panel of seasoned technologists. Each panelist will be responsible for stage scoring and event scoring 150 full PSG overnight sleep studies. The Gold Standard Panel results will allow the AASM to evaluate the performance of AI scoring packages for the certification program. The panelists will be compensated for successfully scoring each sleep study.

Autoscoring Gold Standard Panel

The polysomnography scorer (independent contractor) will serve on a 15-member Gold Standard Panel and manually score 150 full-night PSG records according to the current rules of The AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events. A webinar will facilitate 1:1 training for each panelist, and a 24/7 secure portal will be available for remote scoring.

All records will be stage scored and event scored (arousal, PLM, and respiratory) according to the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events and the protocols arranged by AASM staff to be accepted.

The scoring of the Gold Standard Panel will be compared to the performance of autoscoring software in order to certify products as part of an industry engagement oversight program. This initiative will rigorously assess and certify autoscoring software systems that analyze adult sleep stages and events via in-lab polysomnograms, ensuring they meet our high standards for accuracy and reliability.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Registered sleep technologist (RPSGT, RST, or RRT-SDS) certification required.
  • Early career (original registry date 2020 or more recent).
  • Active AASM Sleep ISR scorer at time of application. (Recent Sleep ISR exam average will be used to rank applicants.)
  • The ideal candidate is reliable and responsive to email communication and is available to set aside approximately 10 hours per week throughout the 9-month period Q2-Q4 of 2025 in order to focus on scoring 150 records accurately.

Timeline

At least four positions will be filled in March 2025 and begin scoring in April 2025. All scoring must be completed by December 2025.

The Gold Standard Panel will use a free downloadable EDF viewer (e.g., Polyman) on their own internet-connected device to review PSGs in 30-second epochs and add staging notations based upon the rules of the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events.
