Women’s Sleep Health: Improving Care at Every Stage of Life

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is committed to improving women’s sleep health across all stages of life. Biological changes related to menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause can significantly impact sleep quality and duration. Research shows that many women experience insufficient sleep at baseline, and sleep disruption is especially common during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Hormonal fluctuations, medical conditions, life events, and underlying sleep disorders — including insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and nightmare disorder — can further affect women’s overall health and well-being. By recognizing these factors, healthcare providers and patients can better identify root causes of poor sleep and ensure appropriate evaluation and treatment at every stage of life.
