The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates Babak Mokhlesi, MD, MSc, FAASM, who was named the 2025 recipient of the Editorial Excellence Award, which recognizes the outstanding work of an associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

“Having been actively involved in various editorial capacities with JCSM for the past 12 years has been a great privilege and a tremendous learning experience. I have had the honor to work under all three editors-in-chief. Being recognized with the Editorial Excellence Award from the AASM is humbling and a great honor,” said Dr. Mokhlesi. “Early in my career, I reached out to Dr. Quan and to Dr. Collop to express my interest and desire to serve the JCSM in any capacity possible. I am most grateful for their trust in me and for the editorial mentorship they have provided me over the years. I certainly hope I can do the same for our up-and-coming sleep scientists.”

Dr. Mokhlesi was selected by JCSM editor-in-chief Dr. M. Safwan Badr and will be recognized during the upcoming annual meeting of the JCSM editorial board, which will be held Tuesday, June 10, during SLEEP 2025 in Seattle.

Dr. Mokhlesi is a Fellow of the AASM and has been a member since 2000. He is the J. Bailey Carter, MD Professor of Medicine and chief of the division of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

From 2006 to 2021, Dr. Mokhlesi served as the director of the sleep disorders center and the sleep medicine fellowship program at the University of Chicago. He was invited to join the editorial board of JCSM under Dr. Stuart Quan’s tenure as editor-in-chief. From 2015 to 2024, he served as an associate editor under Dr. Nancy Collop’s leadership. In 2025, Dr. Mokhlesi started his tenure as a deputy editor of JCSM under Dr. Safwan Badr’s leadership as editor-in-chief.

The Editorial Excellence Award is bestowed in honor of JCSM founding editor Dr. Stuart Quan, who served as editor-in-chief from 2005 – 2014. Previous recipients are listed on the AASM awards page.

The primary responsibility of associate editors is to make editorial decisions on manuscripts assigned to them by the editor. This work includes managing reviews by members of the editorial board and external reviewers, making initial publication decisions, and submitting recommendations for editorials.
