The AASM accredited a sleep center for the first time in 1977, and today there are 2,045 AASM-accredited sleep disorders centers and laboratories for sleep-related breathing disorders that are providing the highest quality of medical care for patients with sleep problems. In 2009 the AASM accredited 296 sleep centers and labs, including facilities in Canada, Guam and Puerto Rico. The number of accredited facilities has continued to grow in 2010 as many sleep centers and labs take advantage of the new online application for accreditation.
