Leadership Election Overview

The AASM Leadership Election empowers active members to shape the future of sleep medicine by voting for candidates to serve on the Board of Directors and the Leadership Development Committee. Nominations for upcoming vacancies on the Board of Directors and Leadership Development Committee are held each Fall, and the leadership election ballot is presented to full members each Spring. The election slate is uncontested to ensure balanced representation and strategic alignment by presenting a curated selection of candidates.

Voting eligibility: Full members in good standing (Regular, Fellow, Fellow Emeritus)

Leadership election March 5 – 26, 2026
Election results announced May 2026
Terms begin June 2026 at SLEEP

Submitting a Nomination

To nominate yourself for a position on the Board of Directors or Leadership Development Committee:

  • Review the Conflict of Interest Policy
  • Submit your application by December 1, 2025
  • Be available for finalist interviews on January 13, 2026 between 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET
  • Preference will be given to nominees with Fellow member status and/or diversity of practice, background, or experience

Board of Directors Nomination Overview

Qualified members may nominate themselves for open positions on the Board of Directors or Leadership Development Committee. The Leadership Development Committee reviews applications and selects a slate of candidates to present to members for election.

  • Must be a full AASM member in good standing
  • Must meet conflict of interest standards

Board members are expected to:

  • Set strategic direction and approve major initiatives
  • Oversee financial and executive leadership
  • Serve on committees and act as liaisons
  • Represent AASM publicly and advocate for its mission
  • Attend quarterly 2–3 day board meetings
  • Participate in committee meetings and calls
  • Review extensive board materials (~300+ pages per meeting)


Leadership Development Committee Nomination Overview

AASM is also seeking nominees for a three-year term as an at-large member of the Leadership Development Committee, beginning June 2026. This role is instrumental in shaping organizational leadership pipelines.

  • Evaluate applications for Board of Directors and Leadership Development Committee positions
  • Set the leadership election slate and submit the final slate to membership for election
  • Oversee the creation of leadership development curriculum to develop leadership skills in volunteers who may become future leaders of AASM
  • Must be a full AASM member in good standing
  • Must have five consecutive years of AASM membership and/or prior service on an AASM committee/task force within the past five years
  • Must meet AASM’s conflict of interest standards

Note: Current members of the Leadership Development Committee are not eligible to nominate themselves for the Board of Directors while serving on the committee.
