On June 30, 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published complete Open Payments data for transfers of value made in 2014 from drug and device manufacturers to health care providers including physicians and teaching hospitals. Transfers of value covered under the program include gifts, meals, payments, honoraria, travel and more. Data from 2014, the second year of data made public through the Open Payments program, represents about 11.4 million financial transactions totaling $6.49 billion. The data include payment records for 607,000 physicians and more than 1,000 teaching hospitals.
Providers are encouraged to visit the CMS website to access the date released by the Open Payments program, which was developed under authority provided by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). All data should be reviewed to confirm that the transactions are correctly attributed. The website features a search tool so that physicians, teaching hospitals and the companies making payments can be searched by name or location.
