In a recent report, the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that state and federal officials have missed several key deadlines in establishing the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges. The report states that there is a possibility that these exchanges will not be ready for open enrollment on October 1, 2013. It also discloses that 15 states with Republican-controlled legislatures or governors have assisted the federal government in carrying out key functions of the law. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) commented on the report and emphasized that the exchanges will be ready on time.
