The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has reviewed the adjustment factors and identified several errors in the scoring logic for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), resulting in several corrections to 2017 final scores and 2019 payment adjustments. Additional changes also have been made to maintain budget neutrality. All revisions were made to performance feedback on the Quality Payment Program website on Sept. 13, 2018.
CMS previously released performance feedback for clinicians participating in MIPS during the 2017 performance year. CMS also simultaneously launched the targeted review process, which provides an opportunity for program participants to request a review of their MIPS payment adjustment factors, if errors are identified. Several concerns were highlighted through the targeted review process:
- The application of the 2017 Advancing Care Information (ACI) and Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances hardship exceptions
- Awarding of Improvement Activity credit for successful participation in the Improvement Activities (IA) Burden Reduction Study
- Addition of the All-Cause Readmission (ACR) measure to the MIPS final score
All AASM members that participated in the Quality Payment Program in 2017 are encouraged to log in to the Quality Payment Program website as soon as possible to review your performance feedback. If you believe there are remaining errors with your 2019 MIPS payment adjustment calculation, we urge you to request a targeted review, as the deadline has now been extended to Oct. 15, 2018, at 8 p.m. EDT.
