sleepmedicine team atWashington
StateUniversity studies the effect
of work/rest schedules on sleep
and performance. Currently, they
areworkingwithUnitedAirlines to
create route-specific fatigue risk
management systems to ensure
adequate rest and sleep to sustain
performance in long duration flights.

Deprivation section. Dr. James is an
AssociateScientist at the Institutes
for Behavior Resources Inc., an
independent, non-profit research
organization inBaltimore, MD.  Dr.

andFatigueResearchDivision
focuses on studies of human sleep,
performance and circadian rhythms
in theoccupational context and
includes the use of biomathematical
modeling.

On July6, 2013,Asiana214was flying across thePacificOcean from Incheon, South
Korea toSanFrancisco, California and crashedon its final approach to the SanFrancisco
InternationalAirport (SFO). The aircraft, aBoeing777-200ER,was carrying307people,
including four pilots (threeCaptains andoneFirstOfficer) and twelveflight attendants.
According to reports, theweatherwas verygood and the crewwas clearedby air traffic
control for a visual approach. Though the investigation is still underway, it appears that
