Deirdre A. Conroy, PhD (Chair)
Dr. Conroy obtained her PhD in
Psychology from City University
of New York. She completed her
clinical training in sleep disorders
medicine at New York Methodist
Hospital and Columbia Presby-
terian Medical Center. She then
completed a 2-year postdoctoral
fellowship at the University of
Michigan Addiction Research
Center. She is currently work-
ing as an Assistant Professor of
Psychiatry and Clinical Director
of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Program at the University of
Michigan.
Zhaoming Chen, MD, PhD

Vice Chair)
Dr. Chen’s medical degree is from
Shanghai Jiaotong university
school of medicine. He then went
to Drexel university for his neu-
roscience PhD and the University
of Pennsylvania for his post-doc-
toral fellowship. He completed his
neurology residency and clini-
cal neurophysiology fellowship
including sleep medicine training
at Georgetown University. He is a
board certified neurologist, neu-
rophysiologist, and sleep medicine
specialist. He is currently working
as co-director of integrative neu-
rology at Stagnes Hospital.
Beverly Fang, MD
Dr. Fang completed her under-
graduate degree from Stanford

The Insomnia Section has been busy identifying key areas in insom-
nia research and treatment that will help to advance the understanding
and management of insomnia. Below, you will hear from Dr. Chen who
provides his insights into the future directions of insomnia medicine.
Next, Dr. Zarrouf will give us a sneak peek into the new
DSM-5
and what
changes we might see in the diagnosis of insomnia. Dr. Beverly Fang will
then discuss the relationship between insomnia and medical and psy-
chiatric disorders and offer ideas to more effectively collaborate in such
an interdisciplinary field. Finally, Dr. Conroy will discuss possible future
directions for insomnia research.
