Mikhail Bochkarev, MD, PhD
Dr. Mikhail Bochkarev, MD, PhD, is starting
his second year as a member of the Sleep
Deprivation section. He is a Research
Fellow in the Sleep Medicine Laborato-
ry, Federal Almazov Medical Research
Centre in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. He
also works as a sleep disorders specialist
at Saint-Petersburg Clinical Hospital of
the Russian Academy of Sciences. He

pean Sleep Research Society in 2014.
Dr. Bochkarev’s primary research inter-
ests concern the effects of sleep loss on
health and performance and the humans’
adaptation to natural conditions of the Far
North. Together with colleagues from the
Research Laboratory for Epidemiology of
Hypertension, he assesses the association
of sleep and cardiovascular diseases in a
study “The Epidemiology of cardiovascular
diseases in 12 regions of Russian Federa-
tion (ESSE-RF)”.
Mathias Basner, MD, PhD, MSc
Dr. Mathias Basner, MD, PhD, MSc, is
Assistant Professor of Sleep and Chrono-
biology in Psychiatry at the University of
Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medi-
cine. Dr. Basner’s primary research inter-
ests concern the effects of sleep loss on
neurobehavioral and cognitive functions,
population studies on sleep time and wak-
ing activities, and the effects of traffic noise
on sleep and recuperation. Dr. Basner is
Deputy Editor of the Journal SLEEP and
President of the International Commission
of Biological Effects of Noise (ICBEN).
Abid Malik, MD
Dr. Abid Malik, MD, is the Medical Director
of the Sleep Disorder Center at Orlando

include the effect of sleep deprivation on
psychiatric disorders, and vice versa. ■

and colleagues recently showed
that physiological effects of sleep depriva-
tion are highly reproducible across a night
of sleep deprivation. The implication of
this study is that if somebody notices de-
cline in performance after a night of sleep
deprivation, they will likely notice similar
decline with future nights of sleep depriva-
tion as well.
Catli

and colleagues have demonstrated
in an interesting study that yawning fre-
quency may indicate sleep deprivation.
Franco

and colleagues demonstrated in
a recent, interesting study that consump-
tion of non-alcoholic beer at dinner time
helps to improve the quality of sleep at
night. Authors feel this is due to that fact
that Beer is the only beverage that contains
hops, a plant which has a sedative effect.
