NEW in 2014 – Selected Publications on Parasomnias

Publication:

A novel non-rapid-eye movement and rapid-eye-movement parasomnia with sleep breathing
disorder associated with antibodies to IgLON5: a case series, characterisation of the antigen,
and post-mortem study. Lancet Neurol. 2014 Jun;13(6):575-86.
Review:
Sabater and colleagues describe a singular neurological parasomnia disorder
associated with autoantibodies to IgLON5, a neuronal cell adhesion protein member of the
immunoglobulin superfamily. The authors characterized 8 patients (5 men and 3 women)
who presented to the Multidisciplinary Sleep Disorders Unit of the Hospital Clinic at
University of Barcelona, Spain. Median age of symptom onset was 59 years (ranging between
52-76 years). All 8 patients had predominant sleep manifestations of both REM and NREM
parasomnia behaviors, including REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in four, as well as
NREM “finalistic”-type movements (ie, dream-enactment like, complex motor behaviors of
usual daytime activities such as eating or drinking). The spectrum of other sleep problems
included hypersomnia, insomnia and sleep disordered breathing with both obstructive sleep
apnea and inspiratory stridor, and central hypoventilation in one patient. Sleep architecture
