AASM and AADSM issue new joint clinical practice guideline for oral appliance therapy

In the first official joint guideline from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), oral appliance therapy is recommended for the treatment of adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who are intolerant of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy or prefer alternate therapy.

American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) President M. Safwan Badr, MD, was recently quoted in a Huffington Post article sharing recommendations on various snoring remedies. While Dr. Badr was happy to contribute, he was disappointed to see that the statements included in the article did not accurately reflect his opinion of or recommendations for oral appliance therapy.

AASM and AADSM seek public comment on oral appliance for sleep apnea guidelines

The AASM and AADSM are currently inviting public comment on draft guidelines for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring with oral appliances. The public comment period is open for 14 days beginning Monday, February 9, 2015 and ending Monday, February 23, 2015. AASM members, AADSM members, nonmember healthcare professionals, patients, insurance and oral appliance companies, advocacy groups, professional medical societies, and other interested members of the public are invited to review the draft guidelines and submit their feedback during this open comment period.
