WESTCHESTER, Ill. – Michael R. Littner, MD, received the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s (AASM) Excellence in Education Award for 2008.
 
“Dr. Littner is actively involved in helping patients overcome their sleep problems, as well as studying effective methods of identifying and diagnosing sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea,” said Mary Susan Esther, MD, AASM president. “Dr. Littner is committed to enhancing the public’s knowledge about the complexities of sleep apnea, and to improving the quality of life of those patients suffering from this serious sleep disorder. He is an accomplished professional who has made a significant impact on the field of sleep medicine, and I congratulate Dr. Littner on receiving the Excellence in Education Award.”
 
Dr. Littner received the award on June 9 in Baltimore, Md., at SLEEP 2008, the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS).
 
Dr. Littner is a professor of medicine at UCLA. He has a particular interest in the application of portable monitoring in the diagnosis and management of OSA. Dr. Littner has served as director or co-director of the AASM board review course since 2006, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
 
Dr. Littner received a medical degree from the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, and completed an internship at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. After completing his residency in internal medicine at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Los Angeles, he went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary diseases at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences.
 
SLEEP 2008 is a four-day scientific meeting featuring an international body of more than 5,000 leading researchers and clinicians in the field of sleep medicine.
