SUMMARY:Long-term Outcomes Research in OSA Discussion
DESCRIPTION:During this live panel discussion\, content experts will review the findings of the draft CPAP technology assessment that was posted recently by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The moderators also will summarize the multi-society response coordinated by the AASM\, and they will discuss approaches the sleep research community can take to address knowledge deficiencies raised by the report. Although the discussion is taking place during the Virtual SLEEP 2021 annual meeting\, all stakeholders are welcome to attend this online event. No registration is required to attend the discussion. \nPanel Discussion Recording\nWatch a recording of the 2-hour AHRQ panel discussion held June 13\, 2021\, during the Virtual SLEEP 2021 annual meeting. \nAbout the AHRQ Report\nThe draft AHRQ report\, “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea\,” was requested by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The report focused on long-term outcomes observed with CPAP treatment for OSA and the putative roles of disease severity measures or sleepiness on CPAP-related outcomes. The draft report concluded that CPAP does not affect long-term\, clinically relevant OSA-related outcomes and questioned the validity of currently used measures of disease severity. \nThe 20-page multi-society comment letter emphasized that the AHRQ conclusion that there are no significant benefits from CPAP treatment does not reflect the totality of available evidence. Therefore\, misinterpretation of the draft report\, as currently written\, will have detrimental repercussions for the care of millions of Americans with OSA receiving benefit from CPAP therapy now and in the future. The letter provides specific recommendations to address these concerns and asks AHRQ to consider revising the draft report prior to final publication to avoid misinterpretations or the appearance of bias. \nModerators\n\nPeter Gay\, MD\nKarin Johnson\, MD\nR. SUMMARY:RBD – Past\, Present\, Future Part 2 Webcast 2021
DESCRIPTION:RBD – Past\, Present\, Future Part 2 Webcast 2021\nThe American Academy of Sleep Medicine presents a webcast on REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD). RBD is parasomnia characterized by dream enactment in the context of loss of physiological atonia during REM sleep. RBD is of particular importance to sleep medicine\, neurology\, and neurosciences as it is one of the earliest manifestations of α-synuclein related neurodegeneration. The majority of patients with isolated RBD eventually develop Parkinson’s disease\, dementia with Lewy bodies\, or multiple system atrophy. Part 2 will focus on the associations between RBD and neurodegeneration and the significance of the RBD population for upcoming clinical trials to slow the progression of neurodegenerative disorders associated with RBD. \nRegister NowSpeakers\n\nRBD and Synuclein-specific Neurodegenerative Disorders\n\nRon Postuma\, MD – McGill University\, Canada\n\n\nBiomarkers of Neurodegeneration in RBD\n\nAmbra Stefani\, MD – University of Innsbruck\, Austria\n\n\nClinical Trials in RBD – Challenges and Opportunities \n\nAleksandar Videnovic\, MD – Harvard University\, USA

SUMMARY:Webinar: Self-Care for Sleep Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Self-care for Sleep Professionals During Difficult Times\nApril 1\, 2020\, 1 PM ET\nCOVID-19 has caused unprecedented disruption for sleep professionals\, patients\, and the public at large. Labs are closed\, practices are scrambling\, and the Sleep Team is socially distanced. Sleep research projects are paused. Industry commerce is reduced. Many professionals are tele-working\, and all are working in new ways – often with stir-crazy children at home. The stress is real\, as are the risks. Yet this too shall pass\, and a bright future lies ahead. In times of crisis\, sleep professionals need to be resilient. Fortunately\, resilience is a skill that can be learned. In this free and highly practical webinar\, sleep psychologist Dr. Emerson Wickwire will share strategies and tactics to enhance self-care for sleep professionals during difficult times: \n\nHow to maintain perspective\nHow to calm your body\nHow to manage fear\nHow to feel positive emotions\nHow to stay focused to accomplish your tasks\nHow to avoid boredom\nHow to maintain social connection\nHow to communicate with loved ones\nHow to enjoy life in difficult times\nAnd more…\n\nEmerson M. Wickwire\, PhD\, FAASM\, is associate professor of psychiatry and medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine\, and director of the Insomnia Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Wickwire is the author of over 100 articles\, chapters\, and abstracts\, and an award-winning educator. His active research portfolio includes over $3 million in grants and contracts focused on sleep health economics as well as remote monitoring and telehealth. From coding and compliance solutions\, to quality assurance strategies\, as well as ever-evolving legal and regulatory policies\, this course will give you the nut and bolts you need to implement best practices in your sleep center.  Maximize your sleep facility’s operations using tips and practical advice from expert practitioners in the field of sleep medicine\, as well as AASM accreditation site visitors. \nFrom 2018 Attendee John Ennis\, RRT:\n“Thank you for such a wonderful conference. I have been working in healthcare for 43 years this November. I am a Respiratory Therapist by background\, but have overseen Sleep Labs and Clinics at various times throughout my career. I returned to Sleep Clinic and Sleep Lab oversight this past year and needed an update on what was new. This conference provided me with many answers and will allow me to go back and share what I learned with our providers and staff.” \nRegister Today
