Continuing Education Information: Professional and Technical Staff Fact Sheet

Professional Staff Members

Requirements

  • 30 CME earned over past 3 years, (e.g. thirty (30) over 36 months) with evidence to support they are in sleep medicine.
  • CME must be AMA PRA Category 1.
  • CME are not prorated based upon date of hire.
  • CME are waived for 36 months from the date of certification for physicians recently completing a board certification in sleep medicine.
  • CME are waived from the end date of a program for medical staff recently completing a formal training program.

Submit

  • Evidence of sleep topics, documented on the tracking log.
  • CME earned from education providers, without sleep titles, will require backup documents listing the CME has been earned in sleep.
  • Date of the earned CME must be listed on the tracking log, or upload backup documents. CME must be less than 36 months from date of application submission.
  • Fellowship certificate or recent Board Certification in Sleep Medicine.

Technical Staff Members

Requirements

  • All registered and non-registered sleep technicians are to earn an average of 10 CECs per year over a 3 years period in sleep related topics (e.g. thirty (30) over 36 months).

Submit

  • CEC documentation/evidence with defined date of education session, provider, sleep related topic and number of credits earned.
  • Sleep Facility educational sessions/meetings are acceptable provided a roster with goals, signed by Facility Director, is maintained with evidence provided at time of site visit.

Applicable Accreditation Standards

30 AMA PRA Category 1 CME (averaging 10 per year) in sleep medicine are required within the past 36 months from date of application submission. Evidence of CME must be documented. Physicians recently completing a sleep medicine fellowship will have their CME requirement waived for 36 months from the end date of the program.

Staff completing a formal training program within the previous 12 months will have CME waived /prorated based on the end date of the program.
Participation in at least 30 hours (averaging 10 per year over 36 months) of CEC in sleep related topics are required from date of application submission. Educational sessions conducted at the facility are acceptable – provided they are documented with a roster and signed by facility director.

Key Things to Keep In Mind

Professional Staff

  • 30 CME are required for all professional staff members regardless of date of hire.
  • Medical Staff Member CME cannot be prorated based upon date of hire. 30 Sleep Medicine CME are required from first day of hire.
  • CME must be AMA PRA Category 1 CME earned in sleep medicine (evidence must be documented).
  • Topics that are not earned in sleep medicine, but have relevancy to sleep, do not meet compliance.
  • CME in “sleep medicine” is determined by title from the education provider.
  • Medications listed as CME must be used for sleep disorders.
  • Physicians recently completing a Fellowship will have CME waived for 36 months from the end date of the program.
  • CME will be prorated for Medical Staff Members who have recently completed a formal training program within the previous 12 months. CME/CEC will be prorated based upon the end date of the program.
  • Completion of Board certification in a different medical specialty other than sleep medicine will not have CME waived.
  • Physicians who have completed board certification in sleep within the past 36 months will have CME waived.
  • Indicate on the CME tracking log completion of board certification date.
  • Physicians currently in a sleep fellowship program are required to submit evidence of topics in sleep medicine in the application.
  • Educational session conducted at sleep facilities are acceptable provided a roster is maintained defining objectives of the session, time spent and is signed by the Facility Director.

Technical Staff

  • 30 CEC are required (averaging 10/year within the past 36 months) from date of accreditation application submission.
  • CEC must be in sleep related topics and completed within the past 36 months.
  • CPR does not meet compliance for CEC.
  • CEC will only be waived if the Facility’s Continuing Education policy addresses prorating based upon date of hire.
  • Educational session conducted at sleep facilities are acceptable provided a roster is maintained defining objectives of the session, time spent and is signed by the Facility Director.
  • Actual CEC evidence of documentation is to be available on site to verify at time of site visit.
  • The ASTEP Introductory course completed through an accredited ASTEP provider is given 1CEC.
  • The online ASTEP program has a total of 23 modules; each module is given 1 CEC.
